Consumer Sentiment Fell to 46.3. Gold Rose. Both Make Sense

American households are feeling worse about their finances than at any point in five months. The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index came in at a preliminary 46.3 for October, against a consensus of 47.6, down 13.6% on a year ago.

Gold rose. That looks like a contradiction, and it is not. Understanding why takes you most of the way to understanding what has been holding the metal up through a difficult autumn.

Sentiment at a five-month low, and economists read it two opposite ways.

What the survey actually found

The headline number hides something more interesting. Sentiment is built from two halves, and this month they moved in opposite directions.

Current conditions, which is how people feel about right now, fell to 44.7. Expectations, which is how they feel about the next twelve months, rose 2.2% to 47.3. Households feel worse about today and slightly better about next year. Coverage attributes the decline mainly to lower-income households under cost-of-living pressure, which fits: petrol has been averaging around $4.36 a gallon and September pump prices set a record.

Two caveats before anyone builds anything on this. It is a preliminary reading, and the final October figure lands on 23 October and can move. And the number that matters most to a central banker is not the sentiment index at all. It is the five-year inflation expectation, which rose to 3.5%.

Why expectations matter more than feelings

Central bankers watch long-run inflation expectations more closely than almost anything else, for a specific reason. Once people expect prices to keep rising, they ask for larger pay rises and accept larger price increases, and that behaviour makes the inflation real regardless of what started it. Expectations are self-fulfilling in a way that sentiment is not.

Which is why 3.5% over five years, against a 2% target, is the line in this release that moves markets.

Two readings of the same number

Two opposite readings of weak US consumer sentiment and what each implies for the gold price
The 10-year Treasury yield near 5.19% shows which reading the bond market has been taking.

Analysts split cleanly on what weak sentiment means for gold, and both cases are coherent.

One reading: a frightened household spends less, growth slows, and the Federal Reserve can stop raising rates sooner. Lower rates help a metal that pays no interest. On this view, bad news for the economy is good news for gold.

The other reading: five-year expectations at 3.5% are precisely what forces a central bank to stay tight. Rates stay high, bond yields stay high, and gold keeps losing the competition for money. On this view, the same survey is bad news.

The bond market has been voting for the second reading. The US 10-year Treasury yield has been running near 5.19%, around its highest since 2002, and gold is still roughly 26% below the record of US$5,589.38 it set on 28 January 2026. The Fed raised its target range to 3.75% to 4.00% on 16 September, which we covered in the September hike post.

What a nervous consumer does buy

There is a third thing happening underneath both readings, and it is the one that concerns a jewellery shop.

When confidence falls and prices rise, some households move money into things they can hold. That behaviour is old and it is not an American phenomenon. Across Asia it is the ordinary response to uncertainty, and it is slow, steady and almost entirely invisible in a daily price chart. We set out how that layer of demand works against the fast money in paper markets and the physical floor.

It is also worth separating two different purchases that get confused here. Buying bullion for exposure to the metal price and buying a chain you wear are not the same decision, and they respond to different things. We set out exactly where they part company in bank gold versus gold jewellery.

The reframe: you are not on either side of this argument

The two readings of the sentiment number are a disagreement about what the Fed does next. That disagreement is real, it matters, and it is not yours.

If you are buying a chain for a wedding in November, neither camp is describing your situation. You are not holding a position that gets called wrong when a survey prints low. You have a date, a budget and a piece in mind, and the only numbers that decide what you pay are these:

Price = (gram weight × purity × the day's gold rate) + workmanship + 9% GST

The day's rate is the only term in that which consumer sentiment touches, and it touches it indirectly, through a chain several steps long. Gram weight and workmanship are set by the piece. If you want to see how far a fixed budget actually stretches, we worked it through in what S$500 buys in 916 gold.

At JJ Gold we will show you the day's rate and the exact gram weight before you decide anything, so you can see which part of the price a survey in Michigan can reach and which part it cannot. Everything we sell is real 916 or 999 gold, never plated, hallmarked, with weight and purity written on the receipt. If a piece sits past what you wanted to spend in one go, it can go on Shop Now, Pay Later with up to 12-month instalments through Atome, PayLater by Grab, or SPayLater by Shopee, and we compare what each costs in our instalment guide.

US consumer sentiment came in at a preliminary 46.3 for October against a consensus of 47.6, with current conditions falling to 44.7 while expectations rose to 47.3. Five-year inflation expectations rose to 3.5%. The final reading comes on 23 October. Gold remains about 26% below its January record while the 10-year yield runs near 5.19%.

Economists cannot agree what a worried consumer means. A chain for your mother's birthday means the same thing either way.
