The Kospi Fell 7.6%. Gold Rose. What Actually Broke

South Korea's Kospi fell 7.6% on Thursday, closing at 5,554.22. Circuit breakers were triggered. It was the index's worst day since July. SK Hynix dropped about 11%, Samsung Electronics about 9.5%, and Japan's Nikkei lost 4.9%.

Gold rose about 1% to around $4,148 an ounce on the same day. The two things are connected, and the connection is not the one most people reach for.

Circuit breakers in Seoul, and a rebound the following morning.

What actually broke

The story gets reported as an AI share sell-off, which makes it sound like investors changed their minds about a technology. The trigger was narrower and more specific than that.

How falling CoreWeave bond prices triggered the October 2026 AI share sell-off across Asian markets
The trigger was a credit repricing, not a change of heart about technology.

CoreWeave, which builds and runs AI data centres, issued bonds at par four months ago, maturing in 2032. Those bonds have been trading below 78 cents. When a bond issued at 100 trades at 78, lenders are saying out loud that they are less confident of being repaid in full.

Equity holders followed the bondholders. Korea is a major centre for the memory chips that go into AI hardware, so a repricing of who funds the build-out hit Seoul harder than anywhere. Hot US inflation the day before, which pushed back any hope of rate cuts, made a bad day worse.

Why gold went the other way

Two separate forces, pulling the same direction.

The mechanical one: money fleeing shares went into US government bonds, which pushed the 10-year Treasury yield down 10 basis points to 5.089%, a three-week low, and the dollar index down 0.4% to 102.11 from an 18-month high. Gold pays no interest, so falling yields and a softer dollar both help it.

The other one is simpler. Gold has no counterparty. A share is a claim on a company's future earnings and a bond is a claim on its ability to repay, so both depend on somebody else's balance sheet holding up. Gold does not. On a day when the market was re-examining exactly that question about a large borrower, that difference is the whole appeal.

Worth noting what gold ignored to do it. US producer prices came in at 6.3% year on year against a 5.3% forecast, which on an ordinary day would have pushed gold down. The risk-off move outweighed the inflation surprise.

And then Friday happened

The Kospi rose more than 3% the next morning. Much of Thursday was a one-day panic that partly unwound before the week ended.

Gold kept most of its gain, which is the more interesting half of the story. The equity market recovered its nerve. The metal did not give back what it had been bought for.

What Asian households have always done

There is a long habit across Asia of keeping part of savings in physical gold rather than entirely in financial assets, and it predates every index on that scoreboard.

It is a slow, unspectacular behaviour, and it rarely shows up in a daily chart. We wrote about how that layer of demand sits underneath the fast money in paper markets and the physical floor, and about how Chinese buyers have been absorbing metal at record pace in the China imports post.

The reframe: a hedge and a chain are not the same purchase

Here is where this needs care, because a week like this invites a bad conclusion.

Everything above describes gold doing a job inside an investment portfolio. If that is what you want, bullion does it more efficiently than jewellery, and it is exempt from GST where jewellery is not. We set out exactly why in bank gold versus gold jewellery.

A chain is a different purchase. You buy it for a wedding, a birthday, a daughter turning twenty-one. It holds its metal value, and that is worth something, but nobody should buy a bracelet because the Kospi had a bad Thursday. The piece will still be the right piece in a month, and the only numbers that set its price are these:

Price = (gram weight × purity × the day's gold rate) + workmanship + 9% GST

Gold is also still about 26% below the record of US$5,589.38 it set on 28 January 2026, which is the context a one-day move of 1% belongs inside.

At JJ Gold we will tell you plainly which of those two purchases you are making, and we will weigh the piece and show you the day's rate before you decide. Everything we sell is real 916 or 999 gold, never plated, hallmarked, with weight and purity written on the receipt. If a piece sits past what you wanted to spend in one go, it can go on Shop Now, Pay Later with up to 12-month instalments through Atome, PayLater by Grab, or SPayLater by Shopee, and we compare what each costs in our instalment guide.
