Buying Gold for Deepavali? The Next Two Weeks Decide It
Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November this year, and Dhanteras, the day traditionally kept for buying gold and silver, is Friday 6 November.
That gives you about two weeks. It sounds like plenty and it is not, because the three things that go wrong with a Deepavali gold purchase all go wrong for the same reason: they need time, and the time runs out before the date does.

Dhanteras is the deadline, not Deepavali
Most people plan backwards from the 8th. The gold-buying day is the 6th, two days earlier, and the week leading into it is when every goldsmith in Singapore is busiest.
Little India has been lit since 3 October. Serangoon Road runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm nightly and the Campbell Lane festival village is open daily from 7pm until midnight through to the 8th. The crowd builds through the last week of October and does not thin out again.
The three things that need lead time

Stock in the size you want. Bangles and rings come in fixed sizes. When a popular size goes in late October it is gone, and it does not come back before the 8th. Chains are easier because length can be adjusted, but a specific width in a specific length is still a finite thing, and the width is what changes how a chain sits. We set out what each one suits in gold chain widths explained.
Workshop turnaround. Lengthening a chain, sizing a ring, fixing a clasp that has worn loose. All of it queues, and the queue is longest in the first week of November. A resize booked on 1 November is routine. The same resize asked for on the 5th is a favour.
Instalment approval. Atome, PayLater by Grab and SPayLater by Shopee all approve before you collect the piece. That is usually quick, and it is not instant, and you do not want to find out which on the day you need to walk out with something. We compare what each one costs in our instalment guide.
What the price is doing, and why it matters less than you think
Gold has been volatile all autumn. It is still roughly 26% below the record of US$5,589.38 it set on 28 January 2026, and it has moved more than 1% in a single day repeatedly this month.
None of that is something you can time, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What is worth understanding is that only one part of a jewellery price moves with the market at all:
Price = (gram weight × purity × the day's gold rate) + workmanship + 9% GSTThe gram weight is set by the piece you pick. The workmanship is set by how it was made. The GST is fixed. Waiting a fortnight to catch a better rate moves one term in that equation by a percent or two, and it costs you the size you wanted. That is a bad trade.
If you want the backdrop on what Indian festive demand has done to the market this year, we wrote it up in the India festive season post.
What to bring with you
Three things make the visit shorter and the outcome better.
- A piece they already wear. The fastest way to get a bangle or ring size right is to measure against something that already fits. Guessing means a second trip, and the second trip is the one that lands in the crush.
- A budget, not a piece. Saying "around S$1,200" lets us show you what that actually buys in grams across several styles. Naming one specific item limits you to whether we have it in your size today.
- Your NRIC, if you think you might use instalments. The approval needs it and it saves a return journey.

The reframe: buy the date, not the dip
Every festive season produces the same conversation at the counter. Someone comes in on the 4th or the 5th, finds the piece they wanted is gone in their size, and says they were waiting to see if the price came down.
The price did come down, sometimes. It came down by less than the cost of not having the piece. A chain is not a position you are timing, it is something that has to exist, in your size, on a particular Sunday.
Come in the week after this one and you will have the full range, the workshop will have room, and you will not be queueing. Come on the 5th and you are choosing from what is left.
Both shops are open daily through the whole season. Lucky Plaza sits on Orchard Road and City Plaza is on Geylang Road, and we wrote about what makes the two districts price differently in where to buy gold in Singapore.
At JJ Gold we will show you the day's rate and the exact gram weight of anything you are looking at, and we will size against a piece you bring in. Everything we sell is real 916 or 999 gold, never plated, hallmarked, with weight and purity written on the receipt. If a piece sits past what you wanted to spend in one go, it can go on Shop Now, Pay Later with up to 12-month instalments through Atome, PayLater by Grab, or SPayLater by Shopee.
Dhanteras is Friday 6 November and Deepavali is Sunday 8 November. The comfortable window for stock, resizing and instalment approval runs out around 1 November. After that you are choosing from what is left rather than what you wanted.
Bring a piece they already wear and we will size against it. City Plaza #01-47 (810 Geylang Road, Singapore 409286) or Lucky Plaza #02-47 (304 Orchard Road, Singapore 238863). Call 8950 4377 for the day's rate before you make the trip.
The gold price will do whatever it does over the next fortnight. Your size will not come back.
